"The only way to get ahead is to get better. If you're not consistently improving in the most important areas, then you're not moving ahead at all". ~Terri Savelle Foy
In general, people wait until January to start a New Year's resolution. Some have different goals, and dreams, and want to go after something great. But what happens? It takes a month to figure it out, which means all of January is wasted.
What do I want?
What are your goals?
We've been going through this book for at least a month now, and we've been taking it slow, writing our goals, and setting S.M.A.R.T. goals.
You matter, you have gifts, and talents that the world needs
.
There are goals and things inside of you that you've been wanting to accomplish for probably years. Were there things that you remember setting for January of 2022, like New Year's resolutions? Did you accomplish them? 97% of people don't accomplish them and probably forgot about them by March.
So I want to help you understand and set some goals. We're creating vision boards this weekend, and we've already done all of the actions in this book.
This book will help guide you with action steps.
1. Start Brainstorming.
List 101 things in a notebook, write them down, and start dreaming. There's no money or time involved yet, just start dreaming. The book wants you to start dreaming.
2. Narrow Your List.
Narrow it down to 10 things that you want to accomplish in the next 12 to 18 months. We're going to choose realistic things. We're not going to something "I want to save $500,000 next year". Instead, we can say "I would like to save 10% of my income this year". Don't say "I want to lose weight". People usually say that they want to lose weight at the beginning of the year. That's great! But how much weight and by what time?
3. Create S.M.A.R.T. goals
We're going to put it on a vision board, we're going to make sure it's in front of us. We're staying focused, and we're going to go after all of those things all year.
Veronica and Anthony.
These good friends have an incredible story. They started in March of 2022, and there was no turning back and that's what they've done. We actually got to celebrate them at an event that we were at in Dallas this last weekend. She's been up to 90 pounds since March of 2022, and I think he's at 85.
Veronica shared with thousands of people on the stage right next to me. After she made the decision to be better and go after her goals, she went after it. She talked about what it did for her physically and how it helped her relationships. Her daughter said that this community has given her her mom back.
4. FOCUS
When you focus on your goals, it shifts your confidence, and your view on yourself, finances, and marriage. All of these things went into place as Veronica got focused. She started working on the things that she could control.
The book talked about saying "No" to a lot of things. You can say "Yes" to the right things and say "No" to 99% of opportunities that come up. You've got a vision so you've got to focus. You've got a vision board, and you know the goals you have for this year.
When other opportunities come up, but they don't align with what you want, then it's okay to say "No".
We've already narrowed it down to 10 goals. You really can't focus on more than 10 goals. Create your vision board with the things you want to accomplish.
I want to go to Florida.
I want to go on a vacation with my family.
I want to pay off some credit card debt.
I want to lose 50 pounds.
We're going to get strategic, put it on a board, and list them as your priority. Sometimes people say that they want to be debt free, pay off credit cards, or pay for their kid's college. List it in the priorities of which comes first. Don't just create a vision board of things that your hope for. I want you to think about this next year and get strategic.
Think about what you can accomplish, and what are some things that you truly love to have, go after, or complete?
"I want to run a marathon this year" Awesome! But what are the steps you need to do? You need to actually put your tennis shoes on, or accomplish a 5k run. There are different things we can help you with.
"The only way to get ahead is to get better. If you're not consistently improving in the most important areas, then you're not moving ahead at all".
It's about focus and what's most important, knowing that it's okay to say "No" to people. A lot of you want fat loss, so get specific on your goals. You're going to lose this amount of weight by this time. You're going to go to the gym five days a week, Mondays through Fridays.
If you get specific with your goals, and something comes up, you can easily say "No". I'm not saying that you can't say "Yes", but if you're at work, you've packed your lunch, and you've determined that's what you're going to do for this next year, then you could easily say "No".
Oftentimes, people will come into your life and they want you to do their priority, not yours. This is all an awareness, because when you're going after goals and dreams, everybody else, and might not realize it, but they want you to submit to their agenda and do yours later.
The Lion Tamer
When a lion tamer is in the circus, his number one focus is on the lion. How in the world would a lion tamer get into a ring with a lion? You can't focus on more than one thing at a time. The lion tamer has a stool and he grabs the stool by the edge he has the prongs poking at the lion, so they have the four legs focused toward the lion's face.
"How can a lightweight piece of furniture protect a human being from a ferocious lion? Simply put, the animal tries to focus on all four legs at once. In an effort to look at too many things at one time, it paralyzes and overtakes the lion. It becomes docile, weak, and disabled".
"Clearly his attention is fragmented and he becomes ill-equipped for what he's designed to actually do. The same is true for people. When you lose your focus, you become paralyzed within, and become ineffective".
"We're trying to do too many things. We have to remember that there will always be an unlimited list of goals that we need to accomplish. And priorities are always fighting for our attention. But if we really want to reach our goals, we must learn the skill of saying no. We must avoid those distractions competing for our attention to pull away from what we truly want in our priorities".
So go after your goals, write them down, and do the work. It's a new year and it's a great time to set new goals and new intentions. But it's one thing to know something, and it's another thing to actually do the actions. It's the action that's going to get you the results.
If you've been watching the Keto Mom page or other people online, you have all of the knowledge and resources. But then it's the action and the focus, that's going to get you to where you want to go.
It's time to get more specific, write down your goals, and start creating vision boards. Our girls are going to create their vision boards tonight. Steve and I will be doing our boards this week or next week. Our daughters want to go to Italy, Greece, or go different places. I want to be able to do an unassisted pull-up, or I want to run a 5km and then set the date.
"Remember what you achieve isn't nearly as important as you become".
It's important to stay focused and consistent. Sometimes it won't be fun. Oftentimes you look at people online, and you think they had overnight success. But in general, when you follow people that have had true success, you don't always hear the story of how they started.
It's the gap that people don't see. It's the five years, three years, or a year of consistent actions. Like when you're doing things at home that nobody sees, you pack your lunch, nobody sees you say no to the fast food, drive past the donut, or get up super early.
I'm not saying "nobody", but in general, you don't see everybody's small little actions of choosing better every single day.
You have to get focused and get really good at being okay with the small steps every single day. You have to also enjoy who you're becoming. You're becoming disciplined and a person of good habits. When you're diving into setting goals and being focused, it's essential to work on your mindset and read books. To have an understanding of how powerful your thoughts and words are. There is more to fat loss than just the food that you put in your mouth.
Get your mindset right, have a heart of gratitude, and understand the power of the words that are coming out of your mouth. There will be hard and challenging days, but you can do it because you are a marathon runner, you are the person that lost 80 pounds, or a person that wants to lose 80 pounds, a person who will get up and not hit the snooze button.
You'll be a person who goes to the gym, pack his lunch, and make better decisions. You might say "No" to a friend and eat out, because they already have their goals written out, and they're ready to give in. Give it one year.
If you were to commit your mindset this year, give it a year, not two weeks, not even two months. Give up one year of fast food or a couple of things that didn't align with your goals. You will have gained years of feeling better, different opportunities, and a better mindset.
I want you to succeed. I wish I could help all of you take action, but I can't. I can only encourage you to understand that...
"As I think, so I feel"
"As I feel, so I do"
"As I do, so I have"
~Joseph McClendon III
I honestly believe the number one thing that will help you achieve your goals is understanding and having awareness.
Give it consistent action over this year. Just like our friends Veronica and Anthony, they're focused. They didn't let other people's priorities disrupt what they were doing. It changed so many areas of their lives, not just in fat loss but in their parenting, marriage, and their finances.
In front of thousands of people, she said "When I made the decision, I wasn't going to look back, I was only going to move forward".
What are you going to go after in 2023?
Start brainstorming, and start creating your vision board because we're going to talk about this all year. Thank you for tuning in, and I truly appreciate it. Hope you guys have a great day and we'll talk to you soon!
